Major outage at Facebook reminds us of how Important Communication is in BCaaS

Even on a normal day, the temporary deactivation of the WhatsApp application has demonstrated the importance of messaging and communication in terms of business continuity. Imagine this happening in unusual circumstances!

We can now access the data we want from wherever we want, whenever we want, and we can message online, thanks to the advancement of internet and cloud technologies. With the Covid-19 pandemic, we saw the best example of this, as many people were able to work from anywhere with an internet connection, whether at home or away from home. What if this situation arose outside of normal circumstances (for example, a major operator failure, a severe earthquake, sanctions, sabotage, war, or a strike)?

Data and communication infrastructure are the two pillars of cloud technologies (public or private). While cloud technology allows data to be centralized, the number of endpoints that data can reach can be in the millions. If a healthcare organization uses cloud technology, it can store two or three copies of its data in different geographies depending on the setup, but if it has 50 branches, they will all need to access the center. Communication is as important as data these days, and if the regional hospital/s have communication issues with the center, it could have disastrous consequences.

Within the scope of BCP (Business Continuity Planning), access and communication channels gain additional priority, even more than before, along with data. SD-WAN (Network Virtualization), satellite communication, 4G/5G, and other technologies are now available. There are numerous ways to gain access and communicate. The risks mentioned earlier may vary depending on the organization; for some, this may result in irreversible consequences, while for others, it can result in both financial and reputational damage. Enterprise risk factors should be prepared and documented according to various scenarios as part of Business Continuity Planning, and it is critical to put the practice into practice.
